19' Emam Ashour ⚽ — Egypt take the lead! First-time finish from outside the box.
66' M. Hany ⚽ OG — Belgium level! Lukaku's run forces Egypt's defender into his own net — just 22 seconds after coming on.

Match Story

This was supposed to be a formality. Belgium — a squad packed with De Bruyne, Courtois, Lukaku — against Egypt, who had never won a World Cup match in history. The script was quickly torn up.

Emam Ashour's composure from outside the box in the 19th minute gave Egypt a deserved lead. Mohamed Salah dictated play, creating chances and forcing Courtois into saves. Belgium huffed, puffed, and hit the bar through De Bruyne's curling free kick.

Then came one of the most dramatic moments of the tournament so far. Lukaku jogged onto the pitch. Twenty-two seconds later, his run to the near post panicked the Egyptian defense and Mohamed Hany poked the ball into his own net. Lukaku scored without even touching the ball.

7' Elijah Just ⚽ — NZ strike early! Cool finish puts the All Whites in front.
32' Ramin Rezaeian ⚽ — Iran level! Shot from distance finds the net.
54' Elijah Just ⚽⚽ — Brace! Just does it again — NZ back ahead with a sensational second.
64' Mohammad Mohebbi ⚽ — Iran rescue a dramatic draw! 2-2 in LA.

Match Story

Elijah Just was the name on everyone's lips after this one. The New Zealand attacker scored a seventh-minute opener and then doubled down in the 54th to give the All Whites what looked like a famous upset victory. Iran — ranked 20th in the world, a seasoned World Cup side — were being outclassed by a team making just their third World Cup appearance.

But Iran refused to lie down. Ramin Rezaeian had already pulled one back before half time, and Mohammad Mohebbi's 64th-minute equalizer completed a stunning comeback. It also meant Group G finished Matchday 1 completely level — all four teams on one point. The race to the knockout stage in this group is wide open.

HT Abdulelah Al-Amri ⚽ — Saudi Arabia lead! Al-Amri pounces on a spilled Muslera save. 1-0 at the break.
2H Maxi Araujo ⚽ — Uruguay equalize! Seizes on a loose ball and slots home from a tight angle. 1-1.

Match Story

Uruguay arrived in Miami as clear favorites. Darwin Nรบรฑez was on the pitch. La Celeste had the pedigree. Saudi Arabia had a new manager in Georgios Donis and limited expectations. What followed was 90 minutes of tactical discipline and goalkeeping drama.

Al-Amri opened the scoring after keeper Fernando Muslera fumbled a long-range effort straight into his path. Saudi Arabia went into the break with a famous lead — but the second half told a different story. Bielsa's side bombarded the Saudi goal with 20 second-half shots, and Mohammed Al-Owais produced astonishing saves to keep Uruguay at bay — until he couldn't.

Maxi Araujo's composed finish from a tight angle leveled at 1-1. Uruguay had 27 shots in total and still only managed a draw. Saudi Arabia will take it as a point earned — maybe two dropped for Uruguay.

๐Ÿšจ The Upset of the Tournament So Far — Spain, the reigning European champions, held scoreless by Cape Verde in their World Cup opener.

Match Story

Spain came in as World Cup favorites. Without Lamine Yamal in the starting XI, they still had enough quality to dismantle most teams at this level. Cape Verde — making just their second World Cup appearance — had other ideas entirely.

Sitting in a compact 5-4-1 formation, Cape Verde blunted Spain's attacking patterns to a remarkable degree. Spain's centre-forward Mikel Oyarzabal reportedly went without a single touch of the ball for the first 30 minutes — the longest any player has gone without contact since records began at the 1966 World Cup.

Even when Yamal entered late in the second half, Spain simply could not break the defensive wall. The whistle blew. Spain 0-0 Cape Verde. Group H now has all four teams level on one point — including Cape Verde and Saudi Arabia tied with Spain and Uruguay. This World Cup is living up to every expectation.

๐Ÿ”‘ Matchday 5 Takeaways

Lukaku's impact without a touch

Belgium's all-time top scorer forced an own goal just 22 seconds after stepping on the pitch — without even touching the ball. That's a World Cup first.

Elijah Just is a name to watch

The New Zealand forward's brace against Iran was the standout individual performance of the day. His emotions got the better of him after scoring — and it's easy to see why.

Saudi Arabia refuse to be intimidated

Al-Owais's second-half heroics kept Uruguay — who had 27 total shots — down to a single goal. Saudi Arabia's defensive organization under Donis is impressive.

Cape Verde make history

Holding Spain to 0-0 is arguably the biggest result of the 2026 World Cup so far. Their 5-4-1 defensive structure was flawless. The gap in world football is genuinely shrinking.
